Leiden: Where Knowledge Blooms for Biodiversity

Biodiversity is under enormous pressure. Species numbers are declining rapidly and that has direct consequences for the air we breathe, the water we drink, and our food. Fortunately, we can turn the tide by working together on solutions, together with researchers, students, residents, policymakers, and the business community.

The Leiden Biodiversity Network connects knowledge from a wide range of disciplines — from biology and governance to economics, from social and climate sciences to landscape architecture, and from medical sciences to artificial intelligence. Together with societal partners, we work on solutions that contribute to a resilient future for both nature and society.

Our approach

Creating impact together

We encourage researchers to look beyond the boundaries of their own disciplines and connect scientists, students, policymakers, residents, entrepreneurs and other societal partners. By bringing knowledge together, we develop pioneering research, inspiring education and innovative projects. Together, we aim to position Leiden as the biodiversity capital of the Netherlands.

Connecting people

Strengthening the network

We organise gatherings where scientists from different disciplines, students, and professionals can connect with each other, share knowledge and experience, and together seek answers to complex questions.

Making impact

Local and regional solutions

We organise activities and collaborate on projects for a climate-resilient and biodiverse Leiden and surrounding region. We encourage fundamental questions and knowledge to find real-world application here, and for practical experience to feed new research questions.

Scaling up

(Inter)national research

We strengthen the national and international research network. Together we explore how local solutions can scale nationally or internationally to create impact, and how global insights can be applied here.
