Expedition Urban Nature Leiden

Expedition Urban Nature Leiden

Residents and researchers collaborate to document local biodiversity and contribute to a growing biodiversity database.

How many species of plants, animals and fungi live in Leiden? During the Urban Nature Expedition, residents, students and researchers join forces to record every spider, snail, mushroom and dandelion they encounter. Together, they help map the state of urban nature and contribute to a growing biodiversity database for Leiden and the surrounding area.

The first Urban Nature Expedition took place in Leiden in 2025, with participants recording more than 2,200 species in just five weeks. From 1 May to 30 June 2026, the Expedition returns for its second edition. This year, we are expanding beyond Leiden to include Oegstgeest, Katwijk and Leiderdorp. Will you take part and help us map local biodiversity?
