Nestwacht: education & research with residents

Thirty nest boxes are managed by school classes (years 7 and 8) and neighbourhood residents in Delft and Leiden. Together, they form the NestWacht and are responsible for collecting data. Through joint research, workshops, and a school lesson package, we bring pupils, residents, and (urban) nature closer together.

Nestwacht combines education, public engagement, citizen science, and scientific research. The project engages residents, families, and primary schools in Leiden and Delft with the nature in their city. It gives them access to scientific research on the impact of climate change and local climate on nature — specifically on the nesting and breeding behaviour of garden birds.
